Pumpkin seeds are getting lots of press lately for their significant health benefits. I was really happy to find a company based here in Rhode Island that is selling a variety of pumpkin seed products and has just switched to a more sustainable packaging design.
Gerbs Pumpkin Seeds is a local company based in Johnston, RI which has been in business since 2003. They sell a number of products which are now available in many parts of the country.
Gerbs has recently reconfigured its packaging reducing their packaging waste and impact by 50% according to the company. Their packaging is made using 100% recycled paperboard 65% of which is post consumer recycled.
My favorite product from Gerbs is their shelled roasted red pepper baked kernels. The product has low sodium and an addictive flavor with loads of beneficial omega acids.
Check their website where you can order their products and also find them at stores nearby.
Packaging and package labeling have several objectives.
The objects enclosed in the package provides protection from, among other things, shock, vibration etc.
Packages and labels communicate how to use, recycle, or dispose of the package or product
Also the packaging and labels can be used by marketers to encourage potential buyers to purchase the product.
Package graphic design and physical design have been important and constantly evolving.
