Pet Food Recall Expands Purina Announces its Own Recall of Wet Dog Food
Nestle Purina Petcare Company (Purina) announced their own voluntary recall of ALPO® Prime Cuts in Gravy wet dog food with specific date codes. This food was not made by Menu Foods subject of the largest pet food recall in the country's history. The recall comes as Purina revealed that wheat gluten (from China) containing melamine, a substance not approved for use
in food, was provided to Purina by the same company that also supplied
Menu Foods. The contamination occurred in a limited production quantity
at only one of Purina's 17 pet food manufacturing facilities.
As Americans are learning more and more about the pet food industry
they didn't know it becomes clear now that at least two major players
in the industry were sourcing filler material for pet food from the
same company in China. The question now is how many others were as
well and what other developments will occur on this story? I don't
think we can rule out the possibility this story will continue to grow
especially given the fact that last week Purina's own website indicated
consumers should have confidence in all their products with the
exception of the one made by Menu Foods.
Finally, it will be especially interesting to see the impact of these recalls on the sales of independent premium pet food brands like Wysong and Castor & Pollux to see if their sales increase. Wysong prides itself in producing high quality pet food and claims to adhere to highest standards both in production and environmental impact of its products. I’d recommend checking Wysong out their products are all made in Wisconsin.
