Diana Rajchel is a busy woman. The self described fashionista, full-time perfumer, occult writer, and volunteer coordinator is the one behind Magickal Realism Naturals, a Minneapolis-based natural perfumery.
Diana’s philosophy with Magickal realism is simple. Running a natural perfumery means she only uses scents composed from materials of organic origin. You will not find any synthetic materials in her fragrances and she is quick to point to that many people who have allergies to perfumes are in fact allergic to the synthetic materials in the perfume. Combine no synthetics with production methods that predate 1870 and you have a sense of Diana’s approach to her craft.
Magickal Realism is also sensitive to being as eco-friendly is possible in their production and choices of ingredients. “In our all-natural approach, we do our best to remain conscious of the needs of the planet, and constantly create new fragrances in order to prevent contributing to the overharvesting of precious plants like sandalwood and galbanaum (frankincense),” said Rajchel. “We believe that keeping plants and the plant around keeps us in business and we support this continuity through our choice of sustainable suppliers, and our careful consideration of what materials we use,” she continued.
Diana currently offers more than 70 unique fragrances to her customers most of which are vegan-friendly. “While we are aware of the continuing popularity of musk and civet, the only animal products used in any of our fragrances is honey and sometimes beeswax – when this happens we do make sure the vegans know so they may select a different product,” she says.
Out of their product line Magickal Realism sells seven men’s and two unisex fragrances. We were able to sample two men’s fragrances, Eugene’s Unbirthday and Woodsman. Eugene’s Unbirthday carries a unique name commemorating the fact Diana’s father celebrated his birthday on the wrong day for almost sixty years. The fragrance is like nothing I’ve ever experienced before. It’s charming in an unusual way. Combining a medley of woods, oak moss, violet and wintergreen the scent is designed for a retro feel with a modern twist. Diana said the scent honors the days of Cary Grant and Clark Gable.
The Woodsman fragrance is a deep wood scent that takes the major woods of sandalwood, pine and cedar and creates a rugged forest of sensual experience and gives the wearer a textured feel.
